Winter may seem like a lot of downtime, but for the avid gardener, we know this is when some of the most important work goes on. We are busy pruning, treating, mulching, and even planting at this point in the year. Sometimes the chores seem a bit overwhelming, so we put together this helpful winter garden checklist.
- Use organic dormant sprays on any fruit trees. Dormant oil is what we use on our fruit trees.
- Prune plants that require winter pruning. Be careful to check for flowering plants and pruning times. You don’t want to prune plants that flower off last years growth. We really like these Felco pruning shears. They will last a lifetime.
- Mulch around perennials if they need it.
- Apply lime to lawns.
- Set up cold frames for tunnels over winter vegetables and plants.
- Start planting indoors or in heated greenhouses anything requiring 10-12 week head start. Our last frost date is around April 25th but if you have an earlier final frost you may be behind already!
Take things one day at a time and don’t let it overwhelm you.
